Mexican Independence Day event officially booked for The Sphere

UFC president Dana White had previous said that he wanted to do the 2024 Mexican Independence Day fight card at The Sphere in Las Vegas.  Now it’s official.

White made the announcement over the weekend during a media scrum and spoke more at length during the UFC 295 Post-Fight Press Conference.

“Mexican Independence Day we are booked for The Sphere,” said White.  “We are already working on the creative for the show.”

“It’s going to be a massive challenge and I love every minute of it.  I can’t wait to dive into this thing.  As I get more of the pieces of the puzzle put together I’ll let you guys know as it comes along.  I’ve super excited about this.  I love challenges.  Everybody keeps saying, ‘I don’t understand how you’re going to put the octagon in there.  I don’t understand how you’re going to do this.  I don’t understand how you’re going to do that.’  Remember that I said this to you tonight, I’m going to put on the greatest live combat sports show anybody has ever seen.”

This year’s Mexican Independence Day event (Sept. 16) took place at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.  It was headlined by a women’s flyweight championship bout between titleholder and Mexican Alexa Grasso and former champion Valentina Shevchenko.  The fight ended in a split draw and Grasso retained her title.

For The Sphere, you can expect more fighters of Mexican heritage competing on the fight card.

The Sphere, also known as the MSG Sphere, is an 18,600 seat venue that features a 16K resolution wraparound interior LED screen, the largest LED screen in the world.  The venue opened on September 29, 2023 with Irish rock band U2 beginning a 36-show residency.  It’s the largest spherical building in the world at 366 feet high and 516 feet wide.

The UFC’s Mexican Independence Day fight card is the first sporting event booked by the venue.
