‘Plans Are Changing’

Conor McGregor has said he’s pushing to fight at UFC 300, and it sounds like the UFC is reversing course on a plan to make him wait until July.

Conor McGregor may end up fighting at UFC 300 after all.

Recently, McGregor’s longtime coach John Kavanagh disappointed the MMA world when he revealed the UFC wasn’t interested in having “The Notorious” compete at UFC 300. Instead, they were looking at July for Conor’s comeback fight.

That kind of sucks. Sure, it’s only three extra months. But it’s on top of two years of rehab and endless delays due to drug testing technicalities. The fans want to see McGregor back in the cage as soon as possible, and the UFC may be listening.

Appearing on The Timbo Sugar Show, MMA reporter Ariel Helwani shared an update on the situation.

“Didn’t you just hear John Kavanagh say no on my show?” he asked. “But I’ve heard since then that maybe plans are changing.”

“Sometimes I feel like the UFC, because Conor is such a big deal, they try to find like the perfect scenario for him to fight in,” he added (via MMA News). “And I can understand from a business stand point why you wouldn’t want to put him on 300. 300 is going to sell itself because of the pageantry of the number and whatnot so maybe if you put him on 301, you get two bites at that million buy apple.”

“Maybe 301 wouldn’t be great without him, but to me, come on man. Conor’s ready to go, who knows how many fights he has left in him, he’s foaming at the mouth, he’s almost begging for a fight. Put him on that damn card”

There may be some desperation on the UFC’s part as well. There’s no clear headliner fight for UFC 300 at the moment. There’s not even any clear combination of headliners that could live up to what the UFC put together for UFC 100 or 200. A lot of the biggest stars are injured or taking breaks.
