Kayla Harrison was hoping to lock down her long-awaited shot at Cris Cyborg with a win last night (Fri., Nov. 24, 2023) at PFL 10: Championship 2023 live on ESPN+ PPV from inside The Anthem in Washington D.C., but it appears she’ll have to wait a little longer to get her hands on women’s MMA royalty.

Harrison was back in action Friday night and for the first time in her career she was coming off a loss. Remember, Harrison was shocked in a massive upset win by Larissa Pacheco back in Nov. 2022. That was the last time fight fans saw her compete and a fight that had many wondering just how good Harrison is.

The former Olympic gold medalist showed up in style at PFL 10 and had her way with former UFC contender Aspen Ladd, who was making her fourth trip to the PFL cage. Harrison dominated the fight from start to finish, and even though she didn’t find a way to stop Ladd before the final bell it was a great showing.

After her performance, Harrison discussed what it meant to return after a loss and get back into the win column.

“Maybe you get a little comfortable,” said Harrison when asked to reflect on her 2022 loss. “You get comfortable being favored, being the top dog, not being challenged, being the ‘Golden Girl.’ To be humbled last year, to be back to the bottom of the totem pole it was really, really good for me. It does make the win that much sweeter.”

With a trip back to the winner’s circle Harrison believes it’s time to finally book a matchup between her and Cyborg. The two have been talking about a superfight for quite some time and with PFL’s recent acquisition of Bellator MMA it seems like perfect timing.

“I don’t know,” said Harrison when asked if Cyborg is next. “I can’t play these games. I’m a mom. I‘m tired. I don’t care. I hope she fights me, but if she doesn’t it’s her loss. It’s the fan’s loss really because I think it would be an amazing fight.

“I respect her. I think that she goes out there and implements her gameplan and she’s tenacious and she’s a killer and she goes after her opponents. And she’s one of the best to ever do it. So I have nothing but respect for her and I want to get in the cage and try to beat the sh-it out of her. That’s it.”

Unfortunately for Harrison, it seems like PFL is looking to go another direction after Friday’s championship card. PFL founder, Donn Davis, met up with media members and revealed that the promotion is targeting a champion vs. champion showdown between Cyborg and Pacheco because it’s something they “have to do.” That would leave Harrison on the outside looking in.

Davis’ interview can be seen below:
