Gilbert Burns weighs in on recent drama surrounding Ian Machado Garry

UFC welterweight Gilbert Burns has nothing bad to say about Ian Machado Garry.

Garry has been at the center of negative headlines lately, ranging from no longer being welcomed at Team Renegade to allegedly being knocked out in practice and his wife’s book labeled, “How to be a WAG” – a term used when referencing the wives and girlfriends of famous athletes.

Burns, who was teammates with Garry (13-0 MMA, 6-0 UFC) at Kill Cliff FC, is amused by how fans love to stir up drama.

“Why are we going so much to the drama side, you know?,” Burns told MMA Junkie in an interview facilitated by Stake.com. “Why are we not going to the good side? I guess the drama gives more views and things if people get more gossipy and they like it.”

Burns says his experiences with Garry and his wife, Layla Machado Garry, have been nothing but positive.

“They have a good relationship so far as I see,” Burns said. “They look good. Whatever they want to say, she’s a little bit older, whatever, but we have a lot of people that are like that. The way I see it, if he’s happy, if she’s happy, if it works for them, whatever, you know? Do whatever you want. They’ve been good to me. They’ve been good to the team for sure.”

Garry faces Burns’ good friend and fellow Kill Cliff FC training partner, Vicente Luque, on Dec. 16 at UFC 296 in Las Vegas. Nothing against Garry, but Burns will be rooting for Luque (22-9-1 MMA, 15-5 UFC), whom he views as his brother.

“It’s going to be a good fight,” Burns said. “They both are strikers. For sure, Ian is the younger guy, the faster guy. He comes quick, you know. He starts fast. He’s got good volume, good kicks, good hands. Vicente’s going to come with war, like he’s battle-tested. He fought so many guys, got into a lot of wars. It’s going to be a good one.”
