Get ready for an excellent fight.

Coming to you live on DAZN, tonight (Sat., Dec. 9, 2023), from San Francisco, Calif., undefeated 25-year old Devin Haney (30-0, 15 KO) moves up to Super Lightweight for the first time to take on WBC World Super Lightweight champion, Regis Prograis (29-1, 24 KO). It’s a big risk for Haney, taking on a bigger opponent in his quest to solidify pound-for-pound greatness, while Prograis goes into Haney’s hometown looking to keep his name in lights in a stacked division.

It’s a rare recent year in boxing where a matchup like this isn’t far and away the feature bout of the year, but we’ve been blessed with some phenomenal matchmaking and willingness of fighters to box other top-tier champions. It’s long been a criticism of boxing that top fighters would duck each other, but lately it’s been contests like this that are becoming a lot more regular, and we, the fans, are the beneficiaries.

It’s hard to understate Haney’s very good run at Lightweight. Wins over folks like Jorge Linares, Joseph Diaz, two over George Kambosos, and his most recent win over Vasyl Lomachenko are absolutely nothing to sneeze at. He has vacated his many belts at that weight class to move up a division and challenge Prograis, WBC’s champioon and No. 2-ranked Rings Magazine contender. While Porgrais isn’t Teofimo Lopez, you’ve got Prograis and Josh Taylor and Arnold Barboza and Richardson Hitchins among others who lead the shark tank that is the Super Lightweight division right behind him.

Also on the card are two more title bouts, a WBO Global Super Lightweight bout between Liam Paro and Montana Love and a scrap for the IBF World Female Bantamweight title as Ebanie Bridges is set to square off with Miyo Yashida.

Haney Vs. Prograis Play-By-Play Results:

Devin Haney vs. Regis Prograis for WBC World Super Lightweight championship

Round 1: Prograis in black and red, Haney in black and white. Prograis with a left to the body. Haney lands a nice jab. Prograis catches Haney coming in with a fresh looking left hand. Prograis to the body, Haney responds to the head. I’m very unsure how to score this. Super close round, so I’m going with a draw.

10-10

Round 2: Prograis hits the body twice, then a right a few seconds later to the head. Haney lands a left. Haney catches Prograis ducking and meets him with a right fist. Uppercut by Haney. Prograis lings forward, ducks down and gets pushed to the canvas, no knockdown.

10-9 Haney

Round 3: Prograis connects with an overhand right, but not clean. Great straight right from Haney plants Prograis. He’s up immediately, but that was a picture perfect shot. Prograis working hard to get something back and coming forward now. Left hand cuffs Prograis and he crashes forward into Haney to clinch up. Haney with a solid right to the body. Check hook by Haney.

10-8 Haney

Round 4: Jab-jab-body by Haney. Prograis working the body as best he can. Lefts by both men just clip each other. Haney 1-2. Left hooks around Prograis’ guard lands in.

10-9 Haney

Round 5: Fun interview between rounds with NFL running backs Najee Harris and Marshawn Lynch. Prograis on the front foot, trying to break the distance that Haney’s maintaining. He gets in a couple here and there, Haney also landing a few, mostly to the body. Left to the body and another to the head lands for Haney. Lovely counter right by Haney as Prograis fell short. Haney lands another couple peppering shots before the round ends.

10-9 Haney

Round 6: Haney with an uppercut that wasn’t flush, but still landed well enough. A counter right, too. Liver shot. 1-2. Stunning right hand and Prograis is wobbly. Haney on the front foot for a few seconds, but decides against going for broke there. That might’ve broken Prograis’ nose. I don’t think Prograis landed a clean shot this entire round.

10-8 Haney

Round 7: They show the punch stats for the fight so far, and man, Prograis has only landed ten percent of his punches. In comparison, Haney has only landed 30%, which is a bit low, but nowhere near a 90% miss rate. Nice counter right by Haney. Prograis finally gets to the body. Much slower round this time as Prograis is blocking much of the punches this round.

10-9 Haney

Round 8: The ref is getting on Prograis’ corner to make sure he’s still in this fight. He doesn’t want Prograis to get a one-sided beatdown for 12 rounds. 1-2 by Haney, but mostly lands on glove. Jab to the forehead of Prograis. Prograis just unable to get into range. Haney uppercut. They trade to the ribs. Haney double jab.

10-9 Haney

Round 9: Prograis finally gets a nice shot near the solar plexus. Haney suffers a weird wardrobe malfunction on his sneakers/boots and time is called. We’re back. Haney double jab. Haney catches Prograis with a couple rights and he’s on skates for a moment. Haney doesn’t chase, and Prograis is back with his legs mostly under him. Prograis lands a jab.

10-9 Haney

Round 10: Regis’ corner threatening to stop it after the round, so let’s see how we go. Haney with a jab. Prograis coming forward and trying a little more, but nothing clean still. Prograis gets in a left. Very slow round so far – a lot more clinches than in any other round. Haney with a jab as Prograis comes in.

10-9 Haney

Round 11: Haney pivots around Prograis and lands to the body. Straight left by Haney. Prograis lands to the body one one punch, but whiffs badly on the follow-up as Haney circles out to his right. Haney’s footwork tonight has been some of the best I’ve ever seen. Haney left to the body, right to the head. Ref warns Haney about pushing the head down. Prograis still trying, eats a straight right hand.

10-9 Haney

Round 12: Prograis punching hard now, lands a couple after he backs Haney back into the ropes. Right hand to the nose by Haney. Both men to the body. Prograis lands a decent right hand finally. Nothing clean for the final minute by either man.

10-9 Prograis

Final result: Devin Haney defeats Regis Prograis, decision

Liam Paro vs. Montana Love for WBO Global Super Lightweight championship

Round 1: Love in white, Paro in black. Slow start here. Jabs by both men. Paro left, but eats a counter for his efforts. Very nice right hand by Love. Love ducks a left.

10-9 Love

Round 2: Love ducks down very low into a squat – Paro punches anyway and hits the top of the head, which gets the ref involved verbally. Paro triple jab. They clinch and Paro hits the back of the head, which again gets the ref involved. Good left by Paro.

10-9 Paro

Round 3: Love with an immediate 1-2. Paro responds with a 1-1-2. Love to the body. The crowd is booing here and I’m not really sure why. Clean jab by Love, Paro responds with a left. Paro gets a left in. They clinch and Love gets bowled over onto his back. Love with a sweet counter at the bell.

10-9 Love

Round 4: One minute in and neither man has found the range at all this round. Paro with a clipping left. Love’s right hand catches some ear and some glove. Another clinch and Paro throws a left as Love ducks his head to his own left. After the punch hit the back of the head (again), the ref gives a final warning to Paro and admonishes Love on the ducking in to the side.

10-9 Paro

Round 5: Paro catches Love coming out of a crouch with a crisp shot. Paro gets in another left. Love clinches, eats a body shot before the ref stops the action. Love with a couple jabs. Paro rips a left hook that catches Love on a slip.

10-9 Paro

Round 6: Near immediate clinch by Love. Great right-left floors Paro! He makes the count, but is dropped seconds later with another left hand. Paro charging forward, backs Love into the ropes. He’s unloading and trying to get Love out of here. Love is eating some shots, none clean and he fires back occasionally. They clinch, Paro storms back in and flurries to the body and head, which finally forces the referee to step in and end it.

Final result: Liam Paro defeats Montana Love, TKO
