Poirier isn’t interested in fighting at UFC 300 unless the opponent makes sense, and not a lot of opponents make sense to the veteran star these days.

What’s next for Dustin Poirier? It’s a question that we’ve been wondering since “The Diamond” lost his last fight to Justin Gaethje via head kick KO back in July. There’s no clear road to title shot with the logjam at the top of lightweight. And he’s one of the biggest stars in the UFC, so you can’t just throw him in vs. whoever.

In an interview taped at the World MMA Awards, Poirier addressed his particular situation with MMA Junkie.

“Yeah, I’m in a I’m in a weird spot,” he said. “It’s like my first in this position in my whole career — still at the top, but kind of like waiting for something big to happen. I’ve always just fought to climb and claw my way to the top, to get big fights. And I feel like now I’m here, and also I’m running businesses outside of fighting.”

“I have a a wine market in Louisiana. I have a hot sauce company, a bourbon company. I have a lot of things going on. Me and my wife are full time always, setting goals and working with the foundation. We have The Good Fight back in Louisiana. So just really busy outside of the cage, but waiting for something to really pop out.

What would pop out to Poirier?

“I don’t know, but I know when they call with an offer, and and I hear the name and I feel that feeling, then that’s gonna be the one,” he said. “I just don’t know. I haven’t heard it yet.”

With UFC 300 looming, many fighters are clamoring to compete on the historic April event. Poirier admitted it’d be nice, but added it’s opponent over event for him.

“I’m not gonna be here for 400,” he said. “I didn’t fight on 200. It would be a big big moment in my career and and It’s a huge night for me in the history books. But we’ll see what happens, man. I think the opponent needs to be right more than the event.”

“Like I said, I’m in a weird spot. Everything needs to be right.”
