Sean O’Malley explains how he uses marijuana in training

Bantamweight champion Sean O’Malley isn’t your typical pot head.  The 29-year old uses marijuana to ‘hyper focus’ in training and it seems to be working.

“I really don’t smoke as much as people think,” O’Malley told Demetrious Johnson in an interview.  “As far as being a professional athlete, I think I do it better than anybody in the UFC as far as recovery-wise.  My habits, my routines, I think I’m on another level compared to anybody in the UFC.”

Smoking anything isn’t great for your lungs and conditioning, but O’Malley takes precautions to ensure his fitness remains championship level.

“As far as smoking, I vaporize it, especially in camp.  I’m not going to smoke a joint.  I’m not going to smoke out of the bong, smoke out of a pipe or dab.  I smoke out of a clean, quality vaporizer pretty much once a day,” explain O’Malley.

“I do a lot of my zone 2s, a lot of my longer workouts, like the 60 minute slower workouts, or lower heart rate workouts, I’ll do f**king just stoned out of my tits,” he said.

“I think if you can use marijuana as a tool you can hyper focus on whatever task you want to but you have to be able to do that.  That’s a skill in itself because you could also get stoned and just completely not do sh*t, just get lost watching YouTube.”

O’Malley puts his 135-pound championship on the line for the first time in the UFC 299 main event on March 9 against rival Marlon “Chito” Vera.  Vera handed O’Malley his only career loss back in August 2020 at UFC 252 and O’Malley wants to avenge the loss.
