Jorge Masvidal Just Offered Demian Maia A Title Shot

Jerome Miron-USA TODAY Sports

As a certified Bad Mother F**ker, Jorge Masvidal certainly isn’t lacking in confidence. You can tell he’s convinced his time is now. First, he’ll take out Nate Diaz in the (fortunately still on) main event at UFC 244. Then he plans to beat the UFC welterweight belt off of whoever is holding it following the Kamaru Usman vs. Colby Covington fight at UFC 245 on December 14th.

Looking ahead to holding the title may be enough for some, but not Jorge. It seems like Demian Maia’s impressive third round submission of Ben Askren at UFC Singapore (highlights!) has “Gamebred” planning three steps ahead. He wants a rematch against the Brazilian jiu-jitsu master, and he’s more than happy to offer Maia a title shot to get it.

”Just spoke to [Jorge] and he wants Maia to save his last fight for him,” Masvidal’s manager wrote on Twitter. “Says after he wins the gold he will give him his shot. He really wants to run that one back.”

Masvidal and Maia fought back at UFC 211 in 2017, with Maia taking a split decision win. As you’d expect, it was all Masvidal on the feet while Maia worked his fierce back control magic on the ground. Enough time was spent there to earn Maia rounds one and three, although props to Masvidal: he didn’t get choked out down there like so many other unfortunate souls.

We’re sure one last title shot sounds okay to Maia as well. Following his big Askren win, Maia told the crowd he had two fights left in him, and he’d like the first to be against Diego Sanchez. A win would give him four in a row, and that’d be enough for a go at hypothetical champ Masvidal as far as we’re concerned. Of course the stars have to align, but it’s something to cheer for on both sides.
