UFC featherweight champ Alexander Volkanovski to undergo surgery for broken hand

Alexander Volkanovski will have to start the new year sitting on the sidelines.

The newly crowned UFC featherweight champion Volkanovski (21-1 MMA, 8-0 UFC), who dethroned Max Holloway at UFC 245 to claim the title, revealed that he broke his left hand in the fight and will be undergoing surgery on Friday.

In the video above, Volkanovski points to some bruising near his left thumb, saying while he doesn’t think it requires major surgery, X-rays revealed that there are a couple of breaks that need to be repaired.

Undefeated in the UFC, Volkanovski became the first Australian-born fighter to claim UFC gold, capping off an incredible year for City Kickboxing, which also captured a title by the way of UFC middleweight champ Israel Adesanya.
