Said Sowma ready for anything against Jermaine Barnes at Titan FC 59

After splitting his two fights in his debut year of 2018, heavyweight Said Sowma was able to improve upon that in 2019 by going undefeated in his two bouts that year.

So it is when Sowma looks back on last year, he’s understandably happy with how things turned out.

“I made progress in my fight career, I got my name out there a little bit, I got wins against two tough opponents, so last year was a pretty good year for me,” Sowma told MMAWeekly.com.

“I think the pace was fine. I would have fought more if more opponents said yes. I had a bunch of fights that guys declined. Everything happens for a reason, and it’s working out great now, so I don’t mind either way.”

When it comes to his development, Sowma feels like the biggest jump he made was in how he approaches fights and how he wants to perform in them.

“I honestly don’t feel like I changed my game too much, it’s more of a mentality I had to change, coming into a fight,” said Sowma.

“I’ve been training for a while, so I was more into a training mindset coming into a fight, not thinking of finishing an opponent or going for a kill, I wasn’t as aggressive. That’s what I’m building on more. That’s what my game plan has changed on, being more aggressive.”

On Friday in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., Sowma (3-1) will look to keep his winning streak going when he faces Jermaine Barnes (3-2) in a main card heavyweight bout at Titan FC 59.

“The game plan is the same: I go in there and I like to strike, I’m a decent wrestler, and I have pretty good ground and pound,” Sowma said. “Whatever happens, happens, I’m pretty well-rounded and am ready for anything, really.”

Looking forward, Sowma might be in line for the biggest opportunity of his career so far, but he’s choosing not to focus on that but rather take things one step at a time.

“For me it’s better to go one fight at a time and see where it takes me,” said Sowma. “I’ve heard the matchmaker from Dana White’s Contender Series has seen me, so I’m on the radar. I might be on that after this one, but if not, I’ll just keep on fighting until I get the call.”
