Media Benches Jones, Promotes Khabib To No. 1

No. 1 bullshit?

The official UFC rankings have been updated in the wake of last weekend’s UFC 254 pay-per-view (PPV) event in Abu Dhabi and Khabib Nurmagomedov has dethroned Jon Jones and claimed the top spot on the promotion’s pound-for-pound (P4P) chart.

Perhaps the media members charged with weekly voting were trying to impress this guy.

Nurmagomedov submitted Justin Gaethje in the UFC 254 main event to unify the lightweight titles. Prior to the event, “The Highlight” was ranked No. 1 at 155 pounds and No. 7 P4P. Was that enough to put “The Eagle” above “Bones” in today’s update?

Not according to Jones, who should be grateful he’s even ranked after ditching his belt.

It should be noted that MMAmania.com editor Steve Juon is a member of the UFC rankings panel but according to the message he just sent me while pillaging my island on Animal Crossing: New Horizons, Khabib was already in his No. 1 slot prior to this week’s refresh.

Here’s a refresher on how the rankings work, courtesy of UFC.com:

Rankings were generated by a voting panel made up of media members. The media members were asked to vote for who they feel are the top fighters in the UFC by weight-class and pound-for-pound. A fighter is only eligible to be voted on if they are in active status in the UFC. A fighter can appear in more than one weight division at a time. The champion and interim champion are considered to be in the top positions of their respective divisions and therefore are not eligible for voting by weight-class. However, the champions can be voted on for the pound-for-pound rankings.

Take a look at what the latest rankings field looks like courtesy of UFC.com. Note: (+/- = movement in rankings, T = tie, *NR = Not previously ranked).

Expect Jones to have more to say in the coming days.

You can expect these rankings to change around this time next week, particularly in the middleweight division, following this weekend’s UFC Vegas 12: “Hall vs. Silva” mixed martial arts (MMA) event on ESPN+ from inside UFC APEX in Las Vegas.
