Edgar ‘Upset’ He Never Got A Crack At Mac

Frankie Edgar is completely focused on fighting Cory Sandhagen later tonight (Sat., Feb. 6, 2020) at UFC Vegas 18, but “The Answer” still finds himself talking about Conor McGregor during fight week.

While Edgar is no longer in position to score a massive money fight with “Notorious” he still can’t help but wonder what would have been. McGregor had once told UFC president Dana White that he’d fight Edgar and donate his own purse to charity, but that never came to fruition.

Edgar, who looks to capture his second-straight win at 135 pounds this weekend, recently spoke about his missed opportunity to fight “Notorious.”

“Of course it upset me. He is the most popular guy in our sport,” Edgar told Just Scrap Radio on BJPENN.com. “Anytime you can get in the cage with someone like that you jump at the opportunity. I do think it is in the past, he is at 155, maybe even 170 if he fights Nate, I’m a couple of weight classes below.”

McGregor, who lost to Dustin Poirier via TKO at UFC 257, seems like he’s open to fighting just about anybody. However, McGregor does have a trilogy in store with “Diamond” and will likely push for that until he gets it. There might not be enough time for Edgar to get his shot at McGregor, but that’s just fine because “Diamond” is still doing his thing.

“I don’t know, I’m sure he wants to fight Poirier again and Poirier wants to make some big money,” Edgar explained. “I have to big up Dustin he had a great performance and is a great guy who has helped me train in the past. I’m just happy for Dustin.”

Edgar will have his own chance to turn in a great performance when he squares off with Sandhagen at UFC Vegas 18. Sandhagen is one of the very best contenders in the division and coming off a recent TKO stoppage over Marlon Moraes. A win over “Sandman” will give Edgar the ammo he needs to lock down one final UFC title shot.

UFC Vegas 18 will go down live on ESPN+ from inside UFC APEX in Las Vegas, Nevada, with Alistair Overeem vs. Alexander Volkov serving as the heavyweight main event.
