The next Heavyweight title challenger could be decided this Saturday (Feb. 27, 2021) when Jairzinho Rozenstruik attempts to halt the rise of undefeated French sensation, Ciryl Gane, inside UFC Apex in Las Vegas, Nevada. Sixty pounds south, top prospect Magomed Ankalaev locks horns with Ukrainian finishing machine Nikita Krylov, while women’s Flyweight submission aces Montana De La Rosa and Mayra Bueno Silva duke it out in UFC Vegas 20’s main card middle feature.

What Went Wrong at UFC Vegas 19?

The three bets were scaled such that only one of them needed to hit to secure a profit, so despite my overestimating Jared Vanderaa’s wrestling and Nate Landwehr’s durability, Casey O’Neill and Chris Daukaus carried us to a profit. Thanks a million, gents.

Thoughts: Alexander Hernandez, Ronnie Lawrence and Dustin Jacoby all look like solid investments.

When Hernandez has the confidence to march forward and let his hands go, he’s a legitimate threat to a good chunk of the division, and his utter mauling of Chris Gruetzemacher should have his head in the right place. He’s had his share struggles, sure, but so has Moises, whose last two victories came via come-from-behind submission and robbery decision. So long as Hernandez doesn’t let Moises bully him, his wrestling and power advantages should carry him to a comfortable victory.

Vince Cachero got absolutely manhandled by Jamall Emmers last time out, and you can only chalk so much of that up to the short notice and size disadvantage. The man’s clearly got issues with takedown defense, and considering that Lawrence took down his “Contender Series” opponent a dozen times over the span of 15 minutes, that’s bad news.

In short, expect Lawrence to dominate the wrestling for the win.

Maxim Grishin is almost certainly going to give Jacoby the stand up war he wants, and he just doesn’t have the tools to win that. That’s because “The Hanyak” is the heavier hitter of the two, has more weapons on the feet, and is more proven against world-level kickboxers. The only real concern is Jacoby’s cardio — as he slowed down on “Contender Series” — but I’m willing to chalk that up to a long stretch of three three-minute rounds in kickboxing throwing off his pacing.

Thoughts: Ciryl Gane and Jimmie Rivera, step right up!

I’ve been high on Gane since before his Octagon debut and nothing he’s done since has given me reason to question my assessment. He’s a truly special Heavyweight who has all the tools necessary to dismantle Rozenstruik. While “Bigi Boi” is a standout striker in his own right, Gane holds the edge in footwork, speed and defense, not to mention the sneaky ground game he occasionally busts out. We’ve already seen Rozenstruik struggle with a mobile kickboxer in Alistair Overeem, and Gane is more than capable of doing the same … and then some.

Both Rivera and Munhoz have improved drastically since their first meeting, but Munhoz’s recent battle with Frankie Edgar shows that he still struggles with composed boxers who refuse to wilt before his pressure. Rivera’s a sufficiently skilled striker to out-class Munhoz on the feet once again. In fact, Munhoz’s only real chance lies in landing one of his trademark club-and-subs, and Rivera’s too savvy to get caught there. In short, bank on Rivera to score the repeat, and if you want to beef up the odds, take your pick of Magomed Ankalaev or Angela Hill.
