After quick submission of ‘UFC legend’ Jeremy Stephens, Mateusz Gamrot ready for top-15 lightweights

LAS VEGAS – Mateusz Gamrot continues to impress as he targets the upper echelon of the UFC’s lightweight division.

Gamrot (19-1 MMA, 2-1 UFC) needed just 65 seconds to submit veteran Jeremy Stephens with a kimura at UFC on ESPN 26 on Saturday and the former two-division KSW champion is ready for a step up in competition.

“Jeremy is a UFC legend and veteran,” Gamrot told reporters at the UFC on ESPN 26 post-fight press conference. “For me, it was fight No. 3. My last fight was a warmup, now I need a really good test and really tough test. But fight with Jeremy was a big opportunity because now I think it’s a big jump for me, and now I deserve top 15. I am ready.

“Lightweight division is very full of tough opponents, but I’m ready for every single guy. Give me, and I show you what I can do.”

He continued, “When Jeremy fought Yair Rodriguez, Zabit (Magomedsharipov), Renato Moicano, Frankie Edgar, Renan Barao, Max Holloway, Charles Oliveira – when Jeremy fought these guys, they needed three rounds by decision. Me, I need only one minute, and I submit this guy. I will be the champion in the future of sure, but give me time and give me big opportunity, and let’s do it.”

Since getting edged out by Guram Kutateladze in his promotional debut in October 2020, Gamrot has scored back-to-back “Performance of the Night” finishes of Scott Holtzman and Stephens, living up to the potential many saw in him after a dominant run in Poland’s KSW.
