Despite battling a slew of injuries early in her career, Josiane Nunes looking to take things one fight at a time

Josiane Nunes isn’t necessarily looking to make up for lost time.

After just three pro fights, Nunes was forced on the sidelines for two-and-a-half years before making her return in 2018. Since then, the Brazilian has gone 4-0, leading to a UFC call.

Nunes was scheduled to face Zarah Fairn in her promotional debut at UFC on ESPN 22 in April, but the bout was scrapped after Fairn missed weight by a whopping 11 pounds. It’s been a frustrating year for the 27-year-old, but Nunes doesn’t want to rush things.

“I’ve been fighting for several years,” Nunes told MMA Junkie. “I had to stop for some time due to injuries, but I managed to return, thankfully. Overcoming that injury was one of my greatest accomplishments. My one loss to Taila Santos was a big learning experience. That’s how it goes.

“And regarding my canceled UFC debut (in April), I was highly disappointed. Though after some time, I let it go so I could focus instead on my next opponent.”

She continued, “I want to take it one fight at a time. Of course, the ultimate goal is the belt. But I’m taking it slow and only concerned with my current opponent. I’m not looking to fight every month. I want to fight only when I’m prepared. I’m training hard to always give my best.”

Nunes (7-1 MMA, 0-0 UFC) will finally make her UFC debut when she faces Bea Malecki (2-0 MMA, 2-0 UFC) on Saturday’s UFC on ESPN 29 card and has worked on all aspects of her game to ensure that she’s ready wherever the fight goes.

“My opponent is tough,” Nunes said. “I never underestimate my adversaries. I’m training in all areas. I train at Astra Fight Team under Marcelo Brigadeiro, and I still work with my original trainer from Striker’s House, Rafael Waslov. I represent both teams. I’m working on my standup and ground game. It’s a complete preparation.”
