Trevin Jones wasn’t going to leave Las Vegas without a fight, aims to be UFC’s best bantamweight

LAS VEGAS – To say it’s been a frustrating few weeks for Trevin Jones is an understatement.

Jones (13-6-1 MMA, 1-0-1 UFC) had numerous opponents withdraw before finally landing Saidyokub Kakhramonov (8-2 MMA, 0-0 UFC) on Saturday’s UFC on ESPN 29 card.

After going through three weight cuts and prepping for various different styles, Jones had every intention of fighting after a 22-hour flight from Guam.

“I had about six names this particular fight, so it’s been a real rollercoaster,” Jones told MMA Junkie during media day at the UFC Apex. “But I’ve got a good team behind me. They told me to stay focused. My boys are very strong-minded. So am I, and it’s all about the strong mind at this point.

“We believe we have all the tools to fight anyone in the division. At the end of the day, we can’t just say that. When it comes to a new opponent, we have to believe that. So that’s all I’m doing. I’m believing I have all the tools and no matter who’s in front of me, I believe I can give them a tough fight.”

Jones’ goal of having an active 2021 has almost been trumped due to a string of bad luck, but after UFC on ESPN 29, he hopes to get at least one more fight in before the end of the year as he looks to climb the bantamweight ladder.

“I’m here to be the best guy in the division,” Jones said. “I’m not here to just join the party and go home and say I hit the UFC. I’m here to fight, and I’m still trying to dig for that fight.

“I probably want to come back end of November, December. Of course I want to come back. I wanted to get three this year. I don’t want to stop my goals. This is a goal for me. This is not just someone that wants to be in the UFC and hip, hip, hooray. I’m here for a reason. I’m here to be a champion, and I’m here to be the best.”
