Jared Cannonier: I’ll turn ‘Blonde Brunson’ into ‘Blood Brunson’ and get title shot

Jared Cannonier sees Derek Brunson as a perfect style matchup for him.

Cannonier (14-5 MMA, 7-5 UFC) meets Brunson at UFC 270 and he plans on putting a halt to “Blonde Brunson’s” impressive five-fight winning streak, which has come over the likes of highly touted Kevin Holland, Edmen Shahbazyan and Darren Till.

Brunson (23-7 MMA, 17-6 UFC) has landed 13 takedowns in his past three wins, but Cannonier doesn’t see Brunson finding any success no matter where the fight goes.

“I think it’s a perfect matchup for me,” Cannonier said in an interview with “The Schmo.” “It’s a classic grappler vs. predominant striker in myself, but I can grapple with the best, as well. I feel this is a perfect matchup for me and a terrible matchup for him. So yeah, I plan on going in there and making that happen.

“I’m about to bust open this UFC middleweight division wide open as soon as I turn ‘Blonde Brunson’ into ‘Blood Brunson’ because I’m going to bloody him up. I’m going to batter him up. ‘Ground Beef Brunson’ – whatever the hell you want to call him. I’m going to beat this man up and then I’m going to move on to my title, and I plan on doing the same thing to each and every person after that.”

Winner of four of his past five, Cannonier is looking to cement himself as the No. 1 contender at middleweight with a win over Brunson on Jan. 22.

“Absolutely,” Cannonier said. “When I get my hand raised, I will get the title fight. I’m going to knock the sh*t out of this guy, and I’m going to earn this title shot.”
