‘I’ll fight you this month’: Dustin Poirier responds to Nate Diaz’s challenge for bout in January

An exciting matchup that never came to fruition in 2018 has just become a hot topic again.

Former UFC interim lightweight champion Dustin Poirier and Nate Diaz were once scheduled to meet at UFC 230, however, an injury prevented the fight from happening. Poirier suffered an injury just over a month away from the fight causing the bout to be scrapped.

Since their scheduled fight, Diaz went on to defeat Anthony Pettis via unanimous decision at UFC 241, but has since dropped back-to-back fights against Jorge Masvidal and Leon Edwards.

On the other hand, Poirier claimed the interim lightweight title by defeating Max Holloway, but lost to Khabib Nurmagomedov in a title unification bout. Poirier then rattled off three straight victories, but is now coming off a title-challenge loss to Charles Oliveira at UFC 269.

After recently stating he is unsure what’s next, Poirier appears to be ready to step in against Diaz sooner rather than later after receiving a challenge on social media.

“I’ll fight Dp in January don’t be a scared lil b*tch this time now or never,” Diaz wrote on Twitter, sparking a back and forth on social media.

If this matchup were to come together, a fight of this magnitude would likely land on a major card. The next such event is UFC 270 in Anaheim, Calif., the first pay-per-view of 2022.
