Clay Collard did not get the end to 2021 that he was looking for on the combat sports front.

Collard, a UFC veteran who made it to the playoffs in the most recent PFL lightweight season, dipped back over into the world of boxing on Saturday, but things did not go according to plan.

After winning six consecutive boxing matches in 2020, Collard has now dropped four straight when competing in the sweet science. Saturday’s setback was the worst of the bunch because Collard was stopped inside the first round by top Cuban prospect Yoelvis Gomez (5-0 boxing) at PBC Christmas Fight Night, which took place at Prudential Center in Newark, N.J.

Collard had minimal answers for Gomez’s power, and once he got rattled with a clean shot was unable to regain his wits and last deeper into the fight.

The defeat for Collard was his second in the boxing ring in the month of December. He lost a unanimous decision to Damian Sosa on Dec. 4.

Collard (20-9), who defeated former UFC and WEC champ Anthony Pettis in April, has yet to discuss his career plans for 2022 and whether he’ll return to MMA for the next PFL season or look to snap his losing skid in the boxing ring.
