Andre Muniz thinks he’s two wins from title shot, wants Derek Brunson next

LAS VEGAS – Andre Muniz may not have been in the middleweight title conversation last week, but he almost certainly is now.

Muniz (23-4 MMA, 5-0 UFC) moved to 5-0 in the UFC with a 30-27 sweep of the scorecards against Uriah Hall (17-11 MMA, 10-9 UFC) on Saturday at UFC 276 in Las Vegas. The win over Hall was yet another big name for Muniz’s resume.

After winning his way into the UFC on Dana White’s Contender Series in 2019, Muniz topped Antonio Arroyo in his UFC debut. Then he had three straight first-round armbar wins over Bartosz Fabinski, Ronaldo Souza and Eryk Anders. Hall was the next big name in that stretch, and Muniz thinks he should be in title consideration for champion Israel Adesanya.

Adesanya defended his belt in the UFC 276 main event with a unanimous decision over Jared Cannonier. Two fights before that, Alex Pereira knocked out Sean Strickland and likely earned a title shot in the process, particularly considering he holds two kickboxing wins over Adesanya.

“(After Pereira beat Strickland), I have the second longest winning streak in the division,” Muniz said at his post-fight news conference at T-Mobile Arena. “I do feel that if he gets a shot (against Adesanya), maximum two fights (more for me), I should have a shot at this title.”

On the way to the next level, Muniz said he’s interested in a fight with Derek Brunson after picking up the win over Hall. Brunson had a five-fight winning streak snapped by Cannonier in February in a title eliminator.

“Analyzing how the situation is, Derek Brunson is there,” Muniz said. “He doesn’t have a fight. He said he wanted a fight in the second (half) of the year, say October or November. All he has to do pick the date and send me a contract.”
