Bill Algeo calls out Chase Hooper for ‘Battle of the Bird Chests’ after UFC on ABC 3 win

ELMONT, N.Y. – Bill Algeo broke out of a tough triangle choke attempt from Herbert Burns on Saturday.

Then he helped break Burns, period. Burns (11-4 MMA, 2-2 UFC) said a knee injury contributed, but Algeo (16-6 MMA, 3-2 UFC) said he could feel his opponent’s energy sapped by the end of the first round of their fight at UFC on ABC 3 in Elmont, N.Y.

“I knew he wanted out of there,” Algeo told MMA Junkie at his post-fight news conference. “But he’s still dangerous, he’s still a fighter. So it was like, feel him out in the first 10, 30 seconds. He’s probably going to go for a haymaker of some sort, a takedown or something.”

Algeo said he did some “dumb stuff” early in the second that gave Burns one last chance to survive. But then Algeo kept the pressure on, and when he gave Burns the chance to stand up, he couldn’t and the fight was over in a rare case of a referee shutting things down with a fighter essentially retiring mid-fight without retiring.

Now Algeo wants to fight Chase Hooper after his $50,000 bonus-winning TKO of Burns.

“As a fellow bird chest-haver, I recognize one. It’s fair to say you can call out another bird chest when you have one. I think it’d be a fun fight.”
