UFC 279 Results: When, Where, and Who?

UFC 279 takes place on Saturday, September 10, at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada. The fight card is topped by a welterweight showdown.

UFC 279 main event: Khamzat Chimaev vs. Nate Diaz vs. Tony Ferguson

Undefeated welterweight contender Khamzat Chimaev (11-0) has blasted his way to a spotless record in the Octagon with wins over the likes of Gerald Meerschaert, Li Jingliang, and Gilbert Burns. Currently sitting at No. 3 in the UFC welterweight division, he was looking to send Nate Diaz packing. But then he was reportedly advised by the UFC medical team to stop cutting weight and came in 7.5 pounds heavy.

Nate Diaz (20-13) is a UFC enigma. His record is mediocre. He’s never won a UFC championship. But his tenacious, bad-boy style draws fans in droves or repels them en masse just the same. Always at odds with the UFC brass, Diaz was looking to upset Chimaev and quite possibly walk away into the sunset. This is the final fight on his current UFC contract. But after Chimaev missed weight, the bout was nixed and the UFC 279 fight card reshuffled.

Diaz now faces former lightweight standout Tony Ferguson (25-7), who is looking to breath new life into his career. Once one of the most feared fighters in the lightweight division, he las now lost four consecutive bouts. Moving up a division, Ferguson gets an opportunity to make an immediate splash at welterweight against one of the bigger names in the sport in Diaz. They’ll square off in the five-round UFC 279 headliner.

NEW UFC 279 co-main event: Khamzat Chimaev vs. Kevin Holland

After Chimaev’s headlining opportunity slipped away, and through hours of negotiation, he was matched up with Kevin Holland (23-7, 1 NC). Holland was originally slated to face Daniel Rodriguez in a main card feature bout, but now gets the upgrade to a five-round UFC 279 co-main event at 180 pounds against Chimaev.

UFC 279 feature bout: Li Jingliang vs. Daniel Rodriguez Tony Ferguson

Li Jingliang (19-7) is consistently flirting with the top ten of the welterweight division, but hasn’t been able to bust down the door. At UFC 279, he was eyeing a win over Tony Ferguson to propel him forward in the division, but now drops out of the co-main event to face Daniel Rodriguez(16-2).

Not only was Jingliang the odd-man out by losing his co-main event slot, but he agreed to face Rodriguez in a 180-pound catchweight bout after Rodriguez made weight of 179 pounds for his planned fight with Holland. Jingliang tipped the scales at 170.5 pounds.

Next Up: UFC Vegas 60 Sandhagen vs. Song

Next in the Octagon is UFC Vegas 60 on Saturday, September 17. Top ten ranked bantamweights Cory Sandhagen and Song Yadong battle it out to see who might be able to shake up the rankings.
