Errol Spence on Terence Crawford fight: ‘This is what I’ve worked my whole career for’

In the current era of boxing, there are more fighters who talk the talk on social media than walk the walk in the ring. Put undefeated WBC, WBA, and IBF Welterweight World Champion Errol “The Truth” Spence Jr. down as a “real one” who walks the walk.

Since 2017 leading up to his first career title fight against former IBF welterweight champion Kell Brock, Spence has told anyone who would listen that he will become the undisputed welterweight champion of the world when everything is said and done in his career.

With a win against WBO Welterweight World Champion Terence “Bud” Crawford in their undisputed welterweight mega-championship fight on Saturday, July 29, at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Spence is one win away from making his prophecy come true. He would go down as a legend in the sport and lay claim to being the best welterweight fighter of the current era.

“This is what I’ve worked for my whole career. I want to be that undisputed welterweight champion of the world and I’m excited to go up against a great opponent like Terence Crawford to accomplish that,” Spence said at his media work out.

“I’ve been fighting the best for a long time. When you see all the legends of the sport, they fought each other and made historic fights. That’s what I want to do. Terence is one of the best fighters in the world and I’m one of the best fighters in the world, so we had to make this happen.”

No matter if you like think he’s going to win or not, Spence, who is highly regarded for his body shot punching and grueling physical style, is already a unified champion and one of the best pound-for-pound fighters in the world today.

Despite the lights being brighter and this being the biggest stage of his career, Spence’s world renowned trainer Derrick James feels his star pupil is ready for this legacy defining fight.

“This means everything. From the moment Errol turned pro, he said what he wanted to do. There were so many steps he had to take to get to this point, and now there’s just one more step to take. Being undisputed champion is everything he wanted,” James said.

“Our goal is to be able to push like we push in every fight. We’re going to use everything we’ve used to be successful throughout Errol’s career. It’s up to Terence if he can step to that.”

Like Crawford, Spence has been in Vegas the last two weeks to get himself fully acclimated to the atmosphere and environment that comes with a mega-fight in Vegas. With both future Hall of Fame fighters laying it on the line, simple things like size and heart may be the difference between who wins and becomes a legend and who takes their first career loss.

With biggest win of his career only days away, Spence is more than excited to show the world why he feels he’s the best boxer in the world today.

“I don’t know how much the size will factor into the fight until we get into the ring. They say he’s a strong guy and we’ll see (on fight night),” Spence said.

“Everybody make sure you tune into this fight. It’s going to be an amazing fight. This fight is going to be a war of attrition. It’s a guts and glory type of fight.”
