GSP Vs. Diaz 2 For UFC 300?

Sonnen doesn’t think ‘one-off spoof fights’ like GSP vs. Diaz or a Rousey comeback should be included on the UFC 300 line-up

Are Georges St-Pierre and Nick Diaz going to compete against each other at UFC 300? Chael Sonnen has heard they might, and he is not a big fan of the idea.

UFC 300 is set to go down in April 2024, and it needs a bunch of big fights to compete with past centennial events. Thus far the card has zero obvious match-ups, leading to some pretty unusual speculation. Sonnen is hearing GSP vs. Diaz 2 — originally a grappling bout planned for December — is now being talked about in some form for 300.

Chael is not impressed with the idea of that ‘spoof’ fight.

“You got to 300 a certain way,” he said on his YouTube channel. “Did you do that by bringing guys in on a one-off? I mean the St-Pierre versus Diaz, does that draw? sure. Why didn’t it happen at 199 or 201? Or 299 or 301? Why wouldn’t it happen there, if that is what got us to 300, why would we not continue to follow the principles and policies that got us here?

“I mean, I’m just asking because I’m hearing from some pretty good people, from some pretty meaningful people, a level of silliness within these fights.”

GSP vs. Diaz 2 certainly does seem a bit silly, mainly because St-Pierre is still in peak physical condition and would likely run through the injured and slow Diaz (in any competition that isn’t a triathlon). St-Pierre won their first fight back at UFC 158 in 2013 via 50-45×3 decision.

Will the UFC do it again for UFC 300? We have our doubts, but Chael Sonnen has a habit of being right about the strangest things. He once claimed Jon Jones hid under a cage to avoid a drug test, a story we all considered ridiculous. A decade later, Jones confirmed it. In this case, we’ll only have to wait a little longer before UFC 300 starts being announced.
