Su Mudaerji thinks he’s two wins from flyweight title shot going into UFC on ABC 3

UNIONDALE, N.Y. – Su Mudaerji sees a clear path to the UFC flyweight title, and it begins Saturday with his matchup against Matt Schnell.

Mudaerji (16-4 MMA, 3-1 UFC) is scheduled to meet Schnell (15-6 MMA, 5-4 UFC) in a key divisional bout at UFC on ABC 3. Mudaerji brings a three-fight winning streak in, and if he can get the job done, he thinks that sets him up for a title eliminator at 125 pounds.

“For the flyweight division championship, I think probably two more fights,” Mudaerji told MMA Junkie and other reporters through an interpreter at Wednesday’s UFC on ABC 3 media day. “For this fight, I think I will probably knock out my opponent. I want to challenge a top-five fighter, then the next fight I will challenge for the belt.”

Mudaerji meets Schnell on the ABC-televised main card of this weekend’s event at UBS Arena.

When judging the pairing on paper, Mudaerji sees some good opportunities on the horizon.

“I really look forward for this fight,” Mudaerji said. “I think each fighter who are lower ranked, he wants to challenge the fighter who is ranked higher than him. I think my opponent, his style is very similar to me, so I think this is a really good matchup, and it will provide a very exciting fight.”

If Mudaerji seems like he’s trying to move fast with his title-fight plan, it might be because he is.

The 26-year-old knows he only has limited time remaining in this division as he’s still growing and filling out his frame, so sooner or later he will move up. That’s why he wants to make the most of his current run.

“My current goal is just to try to fight my best in the flyweight division to see what I can achieve,” Mudaerji said. “Then I think my ultimate goal is to move up to bantamweight division.”
